What salary and benefits can I expect when working as a doctor in Ireland?
In the public hospital system, salaries are fixed. As of October 2024, the pay scales (Gross amounts in Euro) are:
SENIOR HOUSE OFFICER: Range from €52,614 – €71,960 per annum
REGISTRAR: Range from €66,872 – €78,748 per annum
CONSULTANTS: Range from €226,681 – €272,290 per annum
Salaries for Minor Injuries Physicians range from €95,000 – €115,000 per annum
For General Practitioners, much will depend on how many days of the week you will work and any other benefits that the employer may be able to offer. Broadly speaking a full time GP will earn €120,000 – €160,000 annually.
How long does the recruitment process typically take from application to placement?
There are many factors involved in the recruitment process and much will depend on your Irish Medical Council status and whether or not you require an Employment Permit and/or Entry Visa to Ireland.

What is the process for obtaining a visa and work permit?
Your employer in Ireland will apply for the employment permit for you once you have accepted a job offer.
Nationals of some countries will require and entry visa in addition to the employment permit. Obtaining and paying for this visa is your responsibility.

A separate MatchMedics team will guide you through the relocation process for you and your family. We will provide support around finding accommodation, local schools, bank accounts and tax and insurance issues.
What are the licensing and registration requirements to practice medicine in Ireland?
In order to work as a Doctor in Ireland, you must have active registration with the Irish Medical Council. To work as a Consultant, specialist registration is required. For all other posts, general registration is accepted.

Do I need to take language proficiency exams or courses to work in Ireland?
If you intend to work in the public hospital system in Ireland and you completed your primary medical degree outside of Ireland, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, the United States of America or New Zealand, its likely that you will be required to provide one of the following English language certificates:

Can I work part-time or as a locum doctor in Ireland?
